Free CCA-F Practice: How to Prepare for the Claude Certified Architect — Foundations Exam

If you’re preparing for the Claude Certified Architect — Foundations (CCA-F) exam, you need more than generic AI trivia. The real test is scenario-based: architecture tradeoffs, Claude Code workflows, MCP integration, agent design, and production reliability. This post covers what the official exam looks like—and how The AI Booklet can help you practice.

What is the CCA-F exam?

CCA-F stands for Claude Certified Architect — Foundations. It’s Anthropic’s proctored certification for people who already build production systems with Claude—not beginners learning “what is a prompt.”

It’s aimed at solution architects and engineers who work hands-on with:

  • The Claude API
  • Claude Code
  • The Agent SDK
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP)

If you’re designing agentic systems, coordinating tools, and thinking about failure modes in real deployments, this credential is aimed at you.

Official exam format (at a glance)

According to Anthropic’s published exam guide, the official CCA-F exam typically includes:

  • 60 scenario-based multiple-choice questions
  • 120 minutes (2 hours)
  • Proctored, closed-book — no notes or open web during the session
  • Scaled score from 100 to 1,000
  • Passing score: 720 (roughly 72% if questions were weighted equally)

Questions are not isolated facts. They’re situational: you’re given a realistic constraint (latency, cost, safety, team workflow) and must pick the best architectural or operational answer.

The five exam domains (and how much they matter)

CCA-F is organized into five weighted domains. When you study, spend more time where the exam spends more weight:

  1. Agentic Architecture & Orchestration (27%)
Agent loops, coordinator–subagent patterns, hub-and-spoke design, task delegation, and failure recovery.
  2. Tool Design & MCP Integration (18%)
MCP tools, resources, and prompts; tool descriptions; error shapes; configuration and role-scoped tooling.
  3. Claude Code Configuration & Workflows (20%)
CLAUDE.md hierarchy, slash commands, hooks, plan mode, and CI/CD patterns with structured output.
  4. Prompt Engineering & Structured Output (20%)
Few-shot patterns, validation-retry loops, Batch API tradeoffs, and schema-compliant structured output.
  5. Context Management & Reliability (15%)
Long-context handoffs, escalation, confidence calibration, and error propagation across agents.

A common mistake is studying “prompt tips” only. On CCA-F, orchestration, tools, and reliability together carry more weight than context management alone—plan your prep accordingly.

How to prepare (practical study plan)

1. Map the domains to your experience

Before drilling questions, list what you’ve actually shipped: MCP servers, Claude Code projects, multi-step agents, evals, guardrails. Weak domains become your daily focus.

2. Study scenario-style, not flashcards only

Read the question stem twice: Who is the user? What breaks if we choose the wrong option? What does production care about? The exam rewards judgment, not memorized definitions.

3. Run timed mocks before exam day

Official timing is tight: two hours for sixty scenarios. Shorter timed runs build stamina and expose gaps under pressure.

4. Review misses deeply

After every mock, for each wrong or skipped question, write one sentence: “I chose X because…; the better answer is Y because…” That reflection is where learning sticks.

5. Use official Anthropic docs as source of truth

Certification content tracks Anthropic’s product surface. When practice explanations conflict with current docs, trust the docs.

Introducing The AI Booklet — free unofficial CCA-F practice

The AI Booklet is a free practice site built for CCA-F-style preparation. It is not the real exam—but it mirrors the kind of thinking the exam expects.

What you get on the site

📚 Study library

Browse 100+ topic-based questions organized by certification domains. Each topic includes:

  • The scenario question
  • Why common wrong answers are tempting
  • Why the correct answer holds up in production
  • Your progress is saved in the browser (topics you’ve opened are marked)

⏱ Timed mock exams

When you’re ready to test yourself, run a random 25- or 50-question mock:

  • No hints during the run (exam-like)
  • Pause and resume in your browser
  • Submit to see your score against the 720 / 1,000 pass line (approximate scaling)
  • Optional domain filter to focus one area
